The species of Hymenolobíum (12 in Latin America) are extremely similar to each other, highlighting H. petraeum Ducke, also known as Murarena and Angelim-da-terra.
Description of the Tree:
Huge tree, sometimes reaching 50 m in height by 300 cm of DBH. Grey bark that comes loose in plates.
Wood Characteristics:
Pale brownish-yellow background color, with irregular veins of light reddish-brown coloring. Smooth, dull surface. Medium to coarse texture, straight or reverse grain. Indistinct odor.
Region of Occurrence:
Spread in Pará and in the eastern part of the Amazon, in dry land forests.
Physical-Mechanical Properties:
Angelim-pedra wood can be classified as having low retractability, high specific mass and mechanical strength.
Behavior During Drying:
Difficult air-drying, but rarely cracks or warps.
Workability:
Good workability with mechanical tools, presenting some difficulty when worked manually. A previous drilling is necessary to avoid cracks in the wood or bending of nails and screws.
